7 reasons to camp at Mendip Basecamp this summer

We're often asked about the highlights of Mendip Basecamp- our family campsite based at Mendip Activity Centre. Just outside of Bristol and Weston-super-Mare, we're based close to Cheddar. We're fortunate to have a stunning location that is perfect for families to spend time together, relax, unwind and connect with nature throughout the summer. Here are 7 reasons we think you'll love us:

1 . Pitch Where You Like

Tents and campervans are welcome on our green and large campsite in the Mendip Hills.

Mendip Basecamp has no pitches! This means you can pitch where it suits you. Choose a quiet corner to observe the beauty of the Mendip Hills, pitch up by the ancient woodland, or perhaps join a group of friends who are already pitched up. We’re a family-run and family-focused site and only allow small groups of well-behaved adults, so you can be rest assured you’ll be surrounded by like-minded folk. Book here.

2. Epic New Sandpit!

Children will love this wild play area with a sandpit, canoes and rocks for scrambling.

Last year, you told us that your children LOVED the sandpit.

So, in 2022, we decided to go big! We got out the diggers and created this exciting, mega sandpit.

No words are needed.

3. Free Live Music for Families

We offer free live music in Somerset with acoustic artists, bands, guitars and singers.

Mendip Lodge, just a 5-minute walk from the campsite, is our onsite cafe/bar and this summer is hosting free live music every weekend.

Join our chilled-out, festival atmosphere and be wowed by local, talented musicians including Emrys the Brave, Razzomo, Sam Evans & The Honky Tonks Band. Did we mention it’s free?! Details here.

4. Climb, Paddle, Walk, Crawl, Aim! We’re not just a campsite; we’re nestled in the heart of an adventure and activity centre with over 20 activities for you to enjoy, including climbing, archery, kayaking, caving, frisbee golf and tobogganing. You’re guaranteed to find something for everyone to try whatever their age. New for 2022 are paddleboarding and low ropes. We recommend booking in advance but there's always something to do on arrival.

5. Fire Pits Encouraged Here's an indisputable fact: fire pits are the best part of camping. And that’s why we encourage their use. Bring your own or rent one of ours (just £10 for the entire stay including a free fire starter kit). All you need to remember are the marshmallows....but if you do forget them, we’ve got them for sale at our well-stocked campsite shop!

6 .No Tent, No Problem!

If you don't have a tent, our pre-erected bunkhouse tents are for you.

If you're still looking for a camping experience but don't have your own tent or campervan, we have options for you. You can book one of our pre-pitched bunkhouse safari tents or check in to a private, ensuite bunk room.

These are back-to-basics adventures, perfect for a well-deserved rest after your day of jam-packed adventuring!

7 .No Check-Out Time!

Pitch your tent or campervan and enjoy the sunsets overlooking the Bristol channel

Not quite ready to go yet? Don’t fancy packing all your kit up in a mad rush?

We know exactly how that feels, having spent years taking our children camping and so you'll be relieved to hear we have no check-out time at Mendip Basecamp- and there's no extra charge for this, keeping our prices affordable for all.

Spend the day how you wish, whether that’s booking one of our exciting activities, grabbing a coffee and croissant from our cafe at the Pavilion, or chilling out whilst the children play.
