There are many highlights of Mendip Basecamp and one of them is our location. Based at Mendip Activity Centre, our family-friendly campsite is just outside Bristol and Weston-super-Mare and close to several outdoor adventure destinations like Cheddar. Here we'll tell you about 7 more reasons Basecamp is the perfect place for families to spend time together, relax, unwind and connect with nature.
1 . Pitch Where You Like
Mendip Basecamp has no pitches! This means you can put your tent where it suits you. Choose a quiet corner to observe the beauty of the Mendip Hills, pitch up by the ancient woodland, or perhaps set up a tent circle with friends and family.
Basecamp is a family-run and family-focused site that also welcomes small groups of well-behaved adults. Rest assured you’ll be surrounded by like-minded folk.
2. The Epic Sandpit!
A perennial favourite, everyone loves the sand pit in the middle of Basecamp. It's massive, it's exciting, and it will keep children entertained for hours. Clamber over boulders, dig channels, build castles and even pretend you're an intrepid explorer venturing out into the wilds in a smart green canoe.
No further words are needed!
3. Free Live Music for Families
Walk 5 minutes from Basecamp to find Mendip Lodge, our onsite cafe/bar and summertime home of live music in the garden! Try great local food and drinks, and take in the chilled-out, festival atmosphere with free performances by talented musicians including Emrys the Brave, Razzomo, Sam Evans & The Honky Tonks Band!
Did we mention it’s free?! Details will be published here when the artists are confirmed.
4. Climb, Paddle, Walk, Crawl, Aim!
We’re not just a campsite!
Basecamp is nestled in the heart of Mendip Activity Centre, which offers over 20 adventure activities. Only a short walk down the hill and your family can try sports like Climbing, Archery, Kayaking, Caving, Frisbee Golf and Tobogganing.
We recommend booking in advance but there's always something to do on arrival. Just pop down to Reception at the Activity Centre and we can help you choose.
5. Fire Pits Encouraged
Here's an indisputable fact: fire pits are the best part of camping! And that’s why we encourage their use. Bring your own or rent one of ours for just £10 for the entire stay, including a free fire starter kit.
All you need to remember are the marshmallows - but if you forget, we’ve got them for sale at our well-stocked campsite shop!
6 . No Tent, No Problem
If you're still looking for a camping experience but don't have your own tent or campervan, we have options for you. You can book one of our pre-pitched bunkhouse safari tents or check in to a private, ensuite bunk room.
These are back-to-basics adventures, perfect for a well-deserved rest after your day of jam-packed adventuring!
7 . And Perhaps the Best Reason to Camp at Basecamp? No Check-Out Time!
Not quite ready to go yet? Don’t fancy packing all your kit up in a mad rush?
We know exactly how that feels, having spent years taking our children camping. You will be pleased to hear we have no check-out time at Mendip Basecamp - and there's no extra charge!
Spend the day how you wish, whether trying an exciting activity, grabbing a coffee and croissant from our cafe at the Pavilion, or chilling out whilst the children play.
Those are just a few reasons why families love to stay at Basecamp, and we love hearing about all the unique experiences adults and children have at Mendip. Summer is always a good time for adventure, and Basecamp is the place to be!
